Track and Field Has Encouraging Performance At The UCM Mule Relays

The NCMC Pirates track and field team delivered a competitive and encouraging performance at the UCM Mule Relays, held over two days on April 9th and 10th. Competing against a strong field, the Pirates showed growth, resilience, and several standout performances across events.

In the javelin, Laney continued her upward trajectory with a 19th-place finish, recording a throw of 30 meters. This mark reflects significant improvement as she continues to bounce back from an injury that impacted her senior year. Her progression has been a positive sign for the Pirates as the outdoor season continues.

The high jump crew had a great weekend with consistent and impressive performances. Allise Perkins cleared strong heights to secure a 4th-place finish, while Genesis Bethea elevated his performance even further, placing 2nd overall. Both athletes demonstrated consistency and confidence, establishing themselves as key contributors for the team.

Nate Giffin showed true resilience across the two-day meet. After a challenging first day in the pole vault, where he placed 9th with a clearance of 4.45 meters, Giffin responded in a big way on day two. He delivered a standout performance in the 400 meters, running a new personal best of 50.01 seconds to place 7th overall.

"Nate has worked super hard all season, and it's showing. To bounce back the way he did after a tough day in the vault speaks to his mentality and growth. He's getting better each week, and this performance is just the beginning of what he's capable of," said Coach Taylor FrancIs

On the women's sprint side, Jamari Ervin led the charge with an impressive showing in both the 100m and 200m. She placed 4th in the 100 meters, running a lifetime best of 12.26 seconds in the prelims before returning to clock 12.48 in the finals. Ervin also recorded a personal best in the 200 meters with a time of 26.49, capping off a strong weekend.

"Jamari had an outstanding meet. To come out and run a lifetime best in the prelims and then double back with another strong race in the finals shows her competitiveness. Adding a PR in the 200 on top of that really highlights the work she's been putting in. She's stepping into a big role for us," said Coach Francis.

Overall, the Pirates used the UCM Mule Relays as a valuable opportunity to build momentum, refine performances, and continue progressing as the season moves forward.
